Saliera

A very special Easter gift awaits wild animals in Ausseerland these days: the “Saliera”, the world-famous work of art by Italian sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, is returning to nature.

The Saliera was once found in a piece of woodland after what was probably the most spectacular art theft in Austrian history. Now it is the focus of an art project in the “Into the Woods” exhibition on the forest ecosystem at the Kunsthaus Wien as part of the “Vienna Climate Biennale”.

The salt saliera returns to the forest

As part of the Vienna Climate Biennale, Anca Benera & Arnold Estefán have created a detailed replica of the famous “Saliera” made of salt - and placed it in the middle of the forest near Altaussee.

Natural forces such as weather and wild animals are constantly reshaping the work of art. Supported by the Austrian Federal Forestry Office, the Unworlding project impressively combines art, ecology and sustainability.

The salt saliera drawn by the forest can be seen at Kunsthaus Wien from April 5 to July 14, 2024.

Wild moments captured

The project is accompanied by impressive nature photographs by wildfoto.at - they show deer, chamois & co. interacting with the salt saliera and reveal how alive the work of art looks in the forest.
