Habitat Management

More Than Just Timber – The Forest in Altaussee as a Diverse Habitat

The forest is far more than just an area for timber production. As a forester, I see every square meter of forest as a distinct habitat — each with its own unique requirements. No two locations are the same: geological differences, varying soil conditions, different exposures, elevations, and types of vegetation all call for tailored, thoughtful management.

This diversity is especially evident in Altaussee. That’s why we work specifically with key and umbrella species to actively shape and preserve habitats for animals and plants. Capercaillie, woodpeckers, the rare lady’s slipper orchid, and many other species depend on very specific structures and conditions — conditions that we consciously promote and protect.

“A climate-resilient forest doesn’t emerge from rigid concepts, but from a feel for the place, its history — and its future.”
