Alpine Pastures
Nature Conservation through Traditional Land Use
In the Ausseerland region, alpine pastures have been managed for over 4,000 years – with varying intensity, but always in harmony between humans and nature. Today, many areas are threatened by declining use and shrub encroachment. Together with alpine farmers, we are committed to preserving these valuable cultural landscapes through targeted clearing and re-grazing.
Managed alpine pastures are hotspots of biodiversity: they provide habitats for numerous plant and animal species that would be lost without continued use. The overgrowth of these areas leads to a decline in biodiversity – something we actively counteract.
In addition, alpine pastures make an important contribution to wildlife management: as attractive feeding grounds for all hoofed game species, they ease the pressure on surrounding protective forests, allowing them to better fulfill their protective function.
This is how tradition meets modern nature conservation – for a diverse cultural landscape and healthy mountain forests.
