Woodpeckers
Woodpeckers
In the Ausseerland, a total of six woodpecker species can be found: the great spotted woodpecker, black woodpecker, three-toed woodpecker, green woodpecker, and grey-headed woodpecker. In 2002, I made the first observation of the white-backed woodpecker.
Woodpeckers play a very important role in the ecosystem: their cavities provide shelter for other species such as various owl species, songbirds, and wild bees. As part of a project, silhouettes of woodpeckers were sprayed onto dead trees, particularly near hiking trails, to highlight that deadwood trees should remain standing as an important habitat for woodpeckers. The insect richness of these standing deadwoods forms a crucial foundation for the native woodpecker species.
