Dormouse Project (Dryomys nitedula)

Forest Dormouse Project
The Forest Dormouse Project of the Austrian Federal Forests (ÖBf) is dedicated to the protection and study of the rare forest dormouse (Dryomys nitedula), a little-known and highly endangered species. This small rodent is nocturnal, extremely shy, and prefers natural, structurally diverse forests — habitats that are increasingly under pressure.

The goal of the project is to better understand the distribution, ecological requirements, and behavior of the forest dormouse. To achieve this, special nest boxes are being installed, camera traps are used, and genetic samples are analyzed. The insights gained will serve as a basis for targeted conservation measures.
