Red Deer Collaring
Red Deer Collar Project
In the winter, red deer in the Ausseerland primarily concentrate on the provided feeding areas, where the largest native mammal not only has undisturbed access to species-appropriate food but, most importantly, the necessary rest and the possibility of a forest-damage-free overwintering in designated areas.
In the summer, the Tote Gebirge with its vast areas offers an El Dorado for red deer, but it also makes necessary hunting efforts complicated and difficult. To better track wildlife movements, together with professional hunters, the challenging task of sedating and collaring these shy animals as gently as possible was undertaken. A mobile capture pen, which the red deer were gradually habituated to, allowed for a largely stress-free anesthesia using tranquilizer darts followed by collaring.
