Life-Projekt Ausseerland
LIFE Project Ausseerland
The LIFE+ project "Ausseerland" ran from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2019, focusing on three main themes: forests, wetlands (mires), and habitat connectivity. The wide range of measures implemented continue to contribute sustainably to the improvement of these habitat types.
Habitat areas for grouse species were connected across valleys via ecological stepping stones. Wetland areas were cleared of encroaching shrubs and restored through the installation of sheet piling. This has benefited numerous species — including butterflies such as the marsh fritillary.
Rivers and streams were made passable again, and ponds and seasonal wetlands were created and interconnected to provide improved conditions for species such as the stone crayfish, yellow-bellied toad, and Alpine newt.
The total budget amounted to €5,727,240. Through workshops, guided tours, and public information events, a wide range of people were engaged with these topics, promoting long-term awareness and understanding.
